Profit and Loss

Profit and loss is one of the most practical chapters in arithmetic, and it appears in almost every competitive examination held in Assam. The ideas grow out of ordinary buying and selling. A trader buys an article, spends something on it, and then sells it to a customer. If the selling price is more than the cost, there is a profit; if it is less, there is a loss. What makes the chapter interesting is that the examiner rarely asks for a plain rupee figure. The question is usually about percentages, marked prices, discounts, dishonest weights, or two transactions in which a real loss hides behind an apparent gain. Once the basic vocabulary is clear, every question becomes a small exercise in reasoning rather than a formula to be memorised.

Basic Terms

  • Cost Price (CP): the price at which an article is bought, including overhead charges such as transport, repair or packing.
  • Selling Price (SP): the price at which the article is sold.
  • Profit (Gain): when SP is greater than CP, Profit = SP − CP.
  • Loss: when SP is less than CP, Loss = CP − SP.
  • Marked Price (MP) or List Price: the price printed on the article before any discount is allowed.
  • Discount: the reduction allowed on the marked price.

Unless a question says otherwise, profit percent and loss percent are always calculated on the cost price. This single convention explains most of the mistakes made by candidates, because discount is calculated on the marked price and not on the cost price.

The Core Formulas

  • Profit % = (Profit / CP) × 100
  • Loss % = (Loss / CP) × 100
  • SP = CP × (100 + Profit %) / 100
  • SP = CP × (100 − Loss %) / 100
  • CP = SP × 100 / (100 + Profit %)
  • CP = SP × 100 / (100 − Loss %)

These six relations are enough to solve the majority of questions. The skill lies in identifying which two quantities are given and which one is asked, and then choosing the relation that connects them in the fewest steps.

Assuming the Cost Price as 100

One of the fastest methods in this chapter is to assume the cost price as 100. If CP = 100, then a profit of 20% makes the selling price 120, and a loss of 15% makes it 85. Percentages turn into simple whole numbers and fractions disappear. Many questions give the relationship between CP and SP as a ratio; in such cases assuming CP = 100, or taking the denominator of the ratio as the CP, reveals the answer almost immediately.

Marked Price, Discount and Profit Together

A shopkeeper normally marks an article above its cost price and then offers a discount to attract customers. Profit and discount are different ideas. Discount is calculated on the marked price, while profit is calculated on the cost price. When a question supplies the marked price and the discount and asks for the profit percent, the safe procedure is to first work out the selling price from the marked price after the discount, and then compare it with the cost price. Mixing these two bases is the most common error in the chapter.

Successive Discounts

When two discounts are allowed one after the other, they are not added together. A discount of 10% followed by a discount of 20% is equivalent to a single discount of 28%, because 10 + 20 − (10 × 20)/100 = 28. The general formula for successive discounts of a% and b% is a + b − ab/100. Three successive discounts can be handled by applying the formula twice. This is a favourite trap, and candidates who simply add the percentages lose the mark.

The Dishonest Dealer

A dishonest dealer sometimes uses a false weight while buying or selling. If a trader uses a weight that is x% less than the true weight but charges for the full weight at cost price, the profit percent is 100x / (100 − x). If the false weight is used only in the bill, the gain is x%. Such questions test whether the candidate understands that profit depends on the ratio between the quantity claimed and the quantity actually given, and not merely on the price printed on the label.

Two Articles Sold at the Same Price

A well-known problem sells two articles at the same selling price, one at a profit of x% and the other at a loss of x%. In this situation there is always a net loss equal to (x/10)² percent, whatever the value of x may be. If two articles are sold at ₹500 each, one at 10% profit and the other at 10% loss, the net loss is 1%. Candidates who assume that the gain and the loss cancel each other are surprised by the result, and that is exactly why the question is asked so often.

Buying and Selling in Different Units

Some questions state that a certain number of articles are bought for one amount and sold at a different rate. The method is to reduce both the cost price and the selling price to a single unit. If 12 pens are bought for ₹60 and sold at 5 pens for ₹30, the cost per pen is ₹5 and the selling price per pen is ₹6, giving a profit of 20%. Reducing everything to one unit removes confusion and keeps the arithmetic simple.

Profit and Loss in Data Interpretation

In the data interpretation papers of several state examinations, profit and loss is presented through tables of cost, selling price and margin. The calculation is easy, but the candidate must read the table carefully and must not mix one column with another. Here the chapter rewards patience more than speed, and a calm reading of the headings is often the difference between the right and the wrong option.

Why the Chapter Matters for Assam Examinations

ADRE, APSC, Assam Police and SSC papers regularly include profit and loss, often combined with percentage and simple interest. Because the chapter uses only a few formulas but can be twisted into many forms, it favours a candidate who has understood the logic instead of memorising examples. Twenty to thirty well-chosen questions are usually enough to build confidence for the examination.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Calculating profit percent on the selling price instead of the cost price.
  • Adding successive discounts instead of applying the successive discount formula.
  • Forgetting overhead expenses such as transport when the cost price is being fixed.
  • Confusing the marked price with the cost price.
  • Expecting a profit when two articles are sold at the same price with equal percentage gain and loss.

How to Prepare This Topic

  1. Learn the six basic formulas and be able to write them from memory.
  2. Practise questions that give CP and SP, then questions that give one of them with a percentage.
  3. Move on to marked price and discount questions.
  4. Finish with the dishonest dealer and equal-selling-price problems.
  5. Keep a small notebook of the traps you meet, because in this chapter a remembered trap is worth more than a remembered formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between profit and discount?

Profit is the gain over the cost price and is measured on the cost price, while discount is the reduction allowed on the marked price. A shopkeeper may mark an article high and then give a discount, and still make a profit, because the two are calculated on different bases.

Why is profit percent calculated on the cost price?

The cost price is the actual investment made by the trader, so the gain or loss is naturally expressed as a percentage of that investment. This is the standard convention in all competitive examinations unless a question specifically says otherwise.

How do you solve two successive discounts?

Two successive discounts are not added. The equivalent single discount for a% and b% is a + b − ab/100. For example, 10% and 20% together give 10 + 20 − 2 = 28%, not 30%. For three discounts, apply the formula twice.

What happens when two articles are sold at the same price with equal profit and loss percent?

There is always a net loss of (x/10)² percent, where x is the common percentage. For instance, selling two articles at the same price with a 10% profit on one and a 10% loss on the other results in a net loss of 1%.

How should I prepare profit and loss for ADRE and APSC?

Start with the core formulas, then solve questions that give CP and SP, followed by percentage-based questions, then marked price and discount, and finally the dishonest dealer and equal-selling-price problems. Attempt twenty to thirty questions and revise the ones you get wrong on the same day.

a% আৰু b% ক্ৰমিক বট্টাৰ সাধাৰণ সূত্ৰ হৈছে a + b − ab/100।

a% আৰু b% ৰ সমতুল্য এটা বট্টা হৈছে a + b − ab/100।
