LCM and HCF

Every number carries two special companions. The largest number that divides it and another number completely is called the highest common factor, and the smallest number that both of them divide completely is called the lowest common multiple. These two companions, the HCF and the LCM, stand at the base of almost the whole of arithmetic. Fractions cannot be added without a common denominator, ratios cannot be reduced to their lowest terms, and events that repeat at fixed intervals cannot be synchronised without this chapter. In competitive examinations the questions are short, but the examiner hides them in many costumes: bells that ring together, square tiles that cover a floor exactly, soldiers who must march in equal rows, and numbers that leave the same remainder. A candidate who understands the link between the HCF and the LCM and can compute both quickly will find this one of the most dependable scoring chapters.

Basic Terms

  • Factor: a number that divides another number exactly, leaving no remainder.
  • Multiple: the number obtained when a given number is multiplied by a whole number.
  • Common factor: a factor that is shared by two or more given numbers.
  • HCF or GCD: the greatest number that divides each of the given numbers exactly.
  • LCM: the smallest number that is a multiple of each of the given numbers.
  • Co-prime numbers: two numbers whose only common factor is one.
  • Prime factorisation: writing a number as a product of its prime factors.

The HCF is always smaller than or equal to the smallest of the given numbers, and the LCM is always larger than or equal to the largest of them. This simple observation is often enough to reject wrong options quickly.

The Core Formulas

  • HCF × LCM = Product of the two numbers (true for exactly two numbers).
  • HCF of fractions = HCF of the numerators divided by the LCM of the denominators.
  • LCM of fractions = LCM of the numerators divided by the HCF of the denominators.
  • If two numbers are co-prime, then LCM = product of the numbers.
  • Smallest number that leaves remainder r with each divisor = LCM + r.
  • Greatest number that divides a, b and c leaving the same remainder = HCF of (a − r), (b − r), (c − r).

These relations cover nearly every question that the examination can set. The candidate should remember that the product rule holds only for two numbers; for three or more numbers it does not apply, and the factorisation method must be used instead.

Finding HCF and LCM by Prime Factorisation

The most reliable method is to break each number into prime factors. For the HCF, we take only those primes that appear in every number, each to the lowest power in which it occurs. For the LCM, we take every prime that appears in any number, each to the highest power in which it occurs. If the numbers are 12 and 18, their factorisations are two squared times three and two times three squared. The HCF takes two once and three once, giving six, while the LCM takes two squared and three squared, giving thirty-six. Notice that six times thirty-six is two hundred and sixteen, exactly the product of twelve and eighteen.

The Division Method

When the numbers are large, the long division method is faster than factorisation. For the HCF of two numbers, we divide the larger by the smaller, then divide the divisor by the remainder, and continue until the remainder becomes zero; the last divisor is the HCF. The LCM can then be obtained from the product rule by dividing the product of the numbers by their HCF. This method is particularly useful for three or more numbers, where the HCF is found by taking two numbers at a time and carrying the result forward.

The Product Relation

The relation that the HCF multiplied by the LCM equals the product of two numbers is the single most useful shortcut in this chapter. Whenever a question supplies the HCF, the LCM and one number, the other number can be found at once without any factorisation. The relation also allows us to check an answer: if the product of the HCF and the LCM does not equal the product of the numbers, then an error has been made. For three or more numbers this neat rule fails, and the candidate must fall back on prime factorisation.

HCF and LCM of Fractions

Fractions are handled by a simple rule. The HCF of several fractions is the HCF of their numerators divided by the LCM of their denominators, and the LCM of several fractions is the LCM of their numerators divided by the HCF of their denominators. The reason is that a common factor of fractions must divide every numerator and must appear in every denominator in the smallest possible way. This rule appears in questions that ask for the greatest fraction that divides several fractions exactly, or the smallest fraction that is a multiple of several fractions.

Remainder Problems

A large family of questions speaks of remainders. If a number leaves the same remainder r when divided by several divisors, then subtracting r from the number leaves a multiple of every divisor, so the number is LCM plus r. If instead each division falls short by the same amount, the number equals LCM minus that shortfall. The greatest number that divides several numbers leaving the same remainder is the HCF of their differences. Recognising which of these three patterns is being used is the whole art of such questions.

Word Problems: Bells, Tiles and Rounds

Word problems are only the formulas dressed in a story. Bells that ring at different intervals ring together again after a time equal to the LCM of the intervals. Square tiles of the largest size that can cover a rectangular floor exactly have a side equal to the HCF of the length and the breadth. Soldiers who must be arranged in rows of different sizes are grouped using the LCM. Whenever a question speaks of things that meet again, repeat together, or fit exactly, the LCM is at work; whenever it speaks of the greatest or largest measure that fits, the HCF is at work.

How This Chapter Appears in the Examination

ADRE, APSC, Assam Police, SSC and Railway papers regularly ask one or two questions from this chapter, and the questions are usually quick. The favourite forms are the product relation, the remainder type, and the bell or tile story. Because the calculation is light and the method is fixed, this chapter rewards practice rather than cleverness. Twenty well-chosen questions are normally enough to meet every variety that the paper can produce.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the product rule HCF × LCM = product for three or more numbers.
  • Taking the highest power of a prime for the HCF instead of the lowest, or the reverse for the LCM.
  • Forgetting to subtract the common remainder before finding the HCF of differences.
  • Mixing the rules for fractions, that is, using the HCF of denominators where the LCM is required.
  • Assuming that co-prime numbers must themselves be prime.

How to Prepare This Topic

  1. Learn to write any number as the product of its prime factors.
  2. Practise finding the HCF and the LCM of two numbers by factorisation.
  3. Learn the division method so that large numbers can be handled quickly.
  4. Move on to fractions, remainders and the product relation.
  5. Finish with word problems about bells, tiles and rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the HCF and the LCM?

The HCF is the greatest number that divides the given numbers exactly, while the LCM is the smallest number that the given numbers divide exactly. The HCF is never larger than the smallest given number, and the LCM is never smaller than the largest given number. For two numbers their product equals the product of the HCF and the LCM.

Is HCF × LCM always equal to the product of the numbers?

Only for exactly two numbers. For three or more numbers this relation does not hold, so the candidate must use prime factorisation or the division method. This is one of the most common sources of error in the examination.

How do you find the LCM of fractions?

Divide the LCM of the numerators by the HCF of the denominators. For example, the LCM of one half and one third is the LCM of one and one, which is one, divided by the HCF of two and three, which is one, giving six. The HCF of fractions is the reverse: HCF of numerators divided by LCM of denominators.

How do you handle a number that leaves the same remainder with every divisor?

Subtract the common remainder from the number, and the result is a multiple of every divisor. Hence the smallest such number is the LCM of the divisors plus the remainder. If every divisor falls short by the same amount, the number equals the LCM minus that shortfall.

How should I prepare this topic for ADRE and APSC?

Begin with prime factorisation, then learn to find the HCF and the LCM of two numbers by both factorisation and division. After that study the product relation, fractions and remainders, and finish with bell and tile word problems. Attempt twenty questions and revise every mistake on the same day.

  • a, b, c ক ভাগ কৰিলে একে ভাগশেষ এৰা আটাইতকৈ ডাঙৰ সংখ্যা = (a − r), (b − r), (c − r) ৰ গ.সা.গু.।
