Percentage

Percentage is the language of comparison. When we say that one number is a certain part of another, the cleanest way to express it is as a fraction of one hundred. This is why the word percent literally means per hundred. Percentage sits behind profit and loss, discount, simple and compound interest, tax, population growth and data interpretation, and a candidate who is comfortable with it finds all of these chapters far easier. In competitive examinations the questions are usually short and are solved by converting the percentage into a fraction or the fraction into a percentage. The examiner likes to combine percentage with ratio, with average and with the increase and decrease of a quantity. Because the same basic relation is repeated in many disguises, this is a chapter where a small amount of clear understanding goes a very long way.

Basic Terms

  • Per cent: a fraction whose denominator is one hundred.
  • Base or original value: the quantity on which the percentage is calculated.
  • Part: the amount that represents the given percentage of the base.
  • Percentage increase: the increase expressed as a percentage of the original value.
  • Percentage decrease: the decrease expressed as a percentage of the original value.
  • Successive percentage change: two or more percentage changes applied one after another.

The word of in a percentage question means multiplication. The word is means equality. Reading the sentence correctly is often the whole task, because once the relation is written as an equation the arithmetic is simple.

The Core Formulas

  • Percentage = (Part ÷ Base) × 100.
  • Part = (Percentage × Base) ÷ 100.
  • Percentage increase = (Increase ÷ Original) × 100.
  • Percentage decrease = (Decrease ÷ Original) × 100.
  • Net change for two successive changes of a per cent and b per cent = a + b + (ab ÷ 100) for an increase, and a − b − (ab ÷ 100) when one is a decrease.
  • If a number is increased by p per cent and then decreased by p per cent, the net change is a loss of (p squared ÷ 100) per cent.

These relations are enough for nearly every percentage question. The candidate should be able to move freely from the part to the percentage and from the percentage to the base without hesitation.

Fraction and Percentage Equivalents

Many questions become very fast if the common equivalents are remembered. One half is fifty per cent, one fourth is twenty-five per cent, one fifth is twenty per cent, one eighth is twelve and a half per cent, one tenth is ten per cent, and one third is thirty-three and one third per cent. Two thirds is sixty-six and two thirds per cent, three fourths is seventy-five per cent, and one twentieth is five per cent. When a percentage in a question matches one of these fractions, replacing it by the fraction removes the division entirely and the answer appears in one line.

Increase and Decrease

Every percentage change must be measured against the original value, not against the new one. If a price rises from eighty to one hundred, the increase is twenty and the percentage increase is twenty divided by eighty, that is twenty-five per cent. The same increase measured against the new value would give twenty per cent, which is wrong. This single point explains most of the mistakes made in this chapter. When the original value is unknown, it is best to take it as one hundred, because then every percentage can be read off directly.

Successive Changes

Two percentage changes do not simply add. If a quantity increases by ten per cent and then by twenty per cent, the total change is not thirty per cent but thirty-two per cent, because the second change is calculated on the value that already includes the first. The net change formula, a plus b plus the product of a and b divided by one hundred, gives the answer at once. A rise followed by an equal fall always produces a small net loss, and the loss is the square of the percentage divided by one hundred. These results are asked repeatedly and should be memorised.

Percentage and Data Comparison

When two quantities are compared, the percentage of one with respect to the other is not the same in both directions. If A is twenty-five per cent more than B, then B is twenty per cent less than A. The reason is that the two comparisons use different bases. Many questions test exactly this relation, and the safe method is always to fix the base and then compare. Writing one quantity as a fraction of the other, and then converting that fraction into a percentage, avoids the trap.

Applications in Profit, Loss and Interest

Profit and loss are only percentage applied to cost price and selling price, and simple interest is percentage applied to a principal. Discount is percentage applied to the marked price. Population growth and depreciation are successive percentage changes. In each case the method is the same: identify the base, write the change as a fraction of the base, and multiply by one hundred. Seeing these chapters as one idea rather than four separate ones builds speed and confidence.

How This Chapter Appears in the Examination

ADRE, APSC, Assam Police, SSC and Railway papers use percentage constantly, often mixed with ratio, average or profit and loss. The questions are short and are designed to be finished quickly once the fraction equivalents are known. Because percentage also appears inside data interpretation sets, a strong grip on it improves the score in several sections at once.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring the change against the new value instead of the original value.
  • Adding two successive percentage changes instead of using the net change formula.
  • Interchanging the base in comparison questions, giving the wrong direction of the percentage.
  • Forgetting to convert the fraction into a percentage by multiplying by one hundred.
  • Assuming that a rise and an equal fall bring the value back to where it began.

How to Prepare This Topic

  1. Learn the meaning of per cent and the basic part, base and percentage relation.
  2. Memorise the common fraction and percentage equivalents.
  3. Practise single increase and decrease questions, always against the original value.
  4. Learn the successive change formula and the rise-and-fall result.
  5. Finish with application questions from profit, loss and interest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does per cent actually mean?

Per cent means per hundred. A percentage is simply a fraction with denominator one hundred, so twenty per cent is twenty divided by one hundred, which is one fifth. Every percentage question can therefore be turned into an ordinary fraction question.

How do you find the percentage increase or decrease?

Divide the increase or decrease by the original value and multiply by one hundred. The original value is always the base. If the original is unknown, take it as one hundred, because then the new value directly shows the percentage change.

Why is a rise of ten per cent followed by a rise of ten per cent not twenty per cent?

Because the second rise is calculated on the value that already includes the first rise. The net change is ten plus ten plus the product of ten and ten divided by one hundred, which is twenty-one per cent. Two changes must never be added directly.

If A is twenty-five per cent more than B, then B is what per cent less than A?

B is twenty per cent less than A. If B is taken as one hundred, then A is one hundred and twenty-five, and the shortfall of twenty-five measured against A is twenty-five divided by one hundred and twenty-five, that is twenty per cent. The base changes between the two statements.

How should I prepare percentage for ADRE and APSC?

Master the fraction and percentage equivalents first, then practise increase and decrease, then successive changes, and finally the applications in profit, loss and interest. Attempt twenty mixed questions and write down every question that involved the wrong base.
