Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Ahom period of Assamese literature?
The Ahom period covers the centuries of Ahom rule in Assam, roughly from 1228 to 1826 CE. It is best known for the Buranjis, the historical chronicles that made Assamese one of the earliest Indian languages with a prose tradition, and for the court and scientific literature produced under royal patronage.
What are the Buranjis and why are they important?
The Buranjis are the official historical chronicles of the Ahom kingdom, recording reigns, wars, diplomacy and important events in prose. They are the most important source of Assam's medieval history and among the earliest specimens of Assamese prose.
Who maintained the Buranjis and in which language were they written?
The Buranjis were maintained by court officials called Buranji-kakats, while traditional lore was also preserved by the Deodhai and Bailung priests. The earliest chronicles were written in the Ahom (Tai) language, and later ones were written in Assamese.
What scientific works were produced in the Ahom period?
The Ahom period produced the Hastividyarnava on the care and management of elephants, the Ghoranidan on horses, Ayurvedic and medical texts, and works on astrology and astronomy, most of them written or translated under royal patronage.
What topics are covered in this Ahom Period section?
