Synonyms and Antonyms for the Assam Police Constable (AB & UB) Exam

Synonyms and Antonyms form one of the surest scoring areas in the General English paper of the SLPRB Assam Police Constable examination. A synonym is a word that means almost the same as another word, and an antonym is a word that means the opposite. The questions are short, they carry a full mark each, and they do not need any long reasoning. The candidate has either learnt the word or has not, and that is why a carefully kept word bank is worth more here than any technique. This page explains what the examiner looks for, gives the pairs that repeat most often, shows how prefixes build antonyms, and warns about the small traps that quietly take away marks. The material follows the standard English grammar and vocabulary reference books used for Assam recruitment examinations and is reviewed before it is published.

How This Portion Is Set

The paper uses this topic in three simple ways. In the first, a word is given and four choices follow, of which one is its synonym or its antonym. In the second, a word is underlined in a sentence and the candidate must choose the closest meaning. In the third, an odd pair must be picked out from a set of word pairs. All three are answered by recognising the word, not by analysing it, so the real work is done during preparation and not in the hall.

What a Synonym Is

A synonym is a word of nearly the same meaning as another. The word nearly is important, because very few pairs are exactly equal. Brave and courageous can replace each other in most sentences, but big and huge cannot, because huge suggests a far greater size. Bright and clever are synonyms in the sense of intelligence, but bright is also used for light, so the sense must be matched and not only the word.

What an Antonym Is

An antonym is a word of opposite meaning. Some opposites are exact, as in day and night or true and false, while others are graded, as in hot and cold, where warm, cool and freezing stand between. The examination usually asks for the direct opposite, so the candidate should first look for the plain pairing and only then consider the graded one.

Context Decides the Correct Choice

Many words carry more than one meaning, and the same word can have different synonyms in different sentences. The word light may mean not heavy, and then its antonym is heavy; or not dark, and then its antonym is dark. When the question is set inside a sentence, the candidate must read the sentence first and ask which sense is being used, because the choices are built to punish a reader who answers from memory alone.

Synonym Pairs That Repeat

A short list of high-frequency pairs is enough for most papers.

  • Abandon and forsake; begin and commence; end and conclude.
  • Brave and courageous; bold and daring; calm and tranquil.
  • Danger and peril; enemy and foe; famous and renowned.
  • Honest and truthful; quick and rapid; rude and impolite.
  • Sad and sorrowful; strong and sturdy; vacant and empty; wise and sagacious.

Antonym Pairs That Repeat

  • Ancient and modern; artificial and natural; bitter and sweet.
  • Bold and timid; deep and shallow; permanent and temporary.
  • Praise and blame; victory and defeat; expand and contract.
  • Generous and miserly; humble and arrogant; scarce and abundant.
  • Optimist and pessimist; victory and defeat; friend and foe.

Prefixes That Build Antonyms

A large number of antonyms are made simply by adding a prefix to a word, and learning which prefix goes with which word saves a great deal of memory.

  • un-: happy to unhappy, able to unable, fair to unfair.
  • in- and its forms im-, il- and ir-: possible to impossible, legal to illegal, regular to irregular, correct to incorrect.
  • dis-: honest to dishonest, appear to disappear, agree to disagree.
  • non-: sense to nonsense, violent to non-violent.
  • mis-: understand to misunderstand, use to misuse.

Word Forms and Parts of Speech

Some questions change the form of the word rather than its meaning. The noun courage, the adjective courageous and the adverb courageously all belong to one family, and a question may give the noun and ask for the adjective. The candidate should learn a word together with its family, because a single root then answers several questions at once.

Traps That Cost Marks

  • Choosing a word that is related in meaning but different in intensity, such as big for gigantic.
  • Answering from the wrong sense of a multi-meaning word.
  • Mixing a synonym with an antonym when the question asks for the opposite.
  • Confusing homophones such as peace and piece or quite and quiet.
  • Assuming that any word with a negative prefix is the antonym, even when the base word is different.

A Revision Plan for This Block

  1. Keep a notebook with three columns: word, synonym and antonym.
  2. Add five new words a day and revise the previous ten before adding more.
  3. Learn one prefix family at a time and test it by making opposites.
  4. Learn each word with its family, so that one root gives several answers.
  5. Revise the whole notebook once a week and solve the vocabulary questions of previous papers.

Words That Look Alike but Differ

Some words are near each other in spelling or sound but far apart in meaning, and the paper uses them as traps. Adapt and adopt are different: adapt means to adjust, adopt means to take as one's own. Accept and except are different: accept means to receive, except means to leave out. Stationary and stationery are different: stationary means not moving, stationery means writing material. Advice is the noun and advise is the verb. A candidate who reads the four choices carefully and matches the meaning, and not merely the sound, avoids this trap.

More Synonym Pairs for Practice

  • Abolish and repeal; accumulate and amass; adequate and sufficient.
  • Bizarre and strange; candid and frank; cautious and careful.
  • Deliberate and intentional; diligent and hardworking; enormous and huge.
  • Fatigue and tiredness; genuine and authentic; hazardous and dangerous.
  • Immense and vast; jubilant and joyful; liberal and generous.
  • Obstinate and stubborn; precise and exact; reluctant and unwilling.
  • Summit and peak; transparent and clear; vanish and disappear.

More Antonym Pairs for Practice

  • Abstract and concrete; accord and discord; ascend and descend.
  • Bless and curse; careful and careless; conceal and reveal.
  • Dawn and dusk; doubtful and certain; feeble and strong.
  • Frugal and wasteful; gradual and sudden; include and exclude.
  • Industrious and lazy; joy and sorrow; knowledge and ignorance.
  • Noisy and silent; opaque and transparent; rigid and flexible.
  • Wild and tame; permanent and temporary; victory and defeat.

Answering a Synonym or Antonym Question in the Hall

In the hall, the candidate should first decide whether the question asks for a word of the same meaning or of the opposite meaning, because a single misread word reverses the answer. Next, the candidate should read all four choices before marking, since two choices may seem close and only one may be exact. Finally, if two choices still seem equal, the candidate should place each one in the sentence, if a sentence is given, and test which one keeps the meaning unchanged. This small discipline turns a guess into a sure mark.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a synonym and an antonym?

A synonym is a word of nearly the same meaning as another, such as begin and commence. An antonym is a word of opposite meaning, such as begin and end.

Can a word have more than one antonym?

Yes. The word light has heavy as its antonym for weight and dark as its antonym for brightness. The sentence decides which opposite is wanted.

How are most antonyms formed?

Many antonyms are made by adding a prefix such as un-, in-, im-, il-, ir-, dis- or non- to a word. Examples are unhappy, impossible, illegal, irregular and dishonest.

Why are exact synonyms so rare?

Because words carry a shade of meaning, a level of intensity and a tone. Two words may point to the same idea but differ in strength or in the company they keep, so a synonym is best understood as nearly the same and not exactly the same.

Is it enough to memorise a word list for this topic?

A word list is the foundation, but it must be learnt with the family of the word and with one example, so that a question phrased differently can still be answered.
