Articles and Determiners

Articles and determiners are the small words that stand before a noun and tell the reader whether the noun is one particular thing or any thing at all. In the ADRE Grade IV General English paper this topic appears through fill-in-the-blanks, error detection and sentence correction questions, and it is among the easiest sections to master because the rules are few and fixed. The whole topic turns on three articles, a, an and the, and a group of determiners such as this, that, some, any, many, much, few, little, each and every. The method followed in the Master Book: Maths Masti (D. Hurina) approach to grammar is to read the sentence, decide whether the noun is definite or indefinite, countable or uncountable, singular or plural, and then choose the word that fits all three answers. A candidate who asks these three questions before every blank rarely makes a mistake here.

Basic Terms

  • Article: the words a, an and the placed before a noun.
  • Indefinite article: a or an, used for one non-specific thing.
  • Definite article: the, used for one specific thing already known.
  • Determiner: any word that comes before a noun and limits it, such as this, my, some or every.
  • Demonstrative: this, that, these and those, which point to a noun.
  • Quantifier: words of quantity such as many, much, few, little, some and any.
  • Zero article: the absence of an article where none is needed.

An article is itself a kind of determiner, so the topic is best studied as one family of words that sit in the same position and answer the same question, namely which noun is meant.

The Two Types of Articles

The indefinite articles a and an are used with singular countable nouns when the thing is not specific. The definite article the is used when both the speaker and the listener know exactly which thing is meant, whether because it was mentioned before, because it is unique, or because it is clear from the situation. The choice between a and an depends on sound and not on spelling.

Rules for a and an

Use a before a word that begins with a consonant sound and an before a word that begins with a vowel sound. It is the sound that matters, not the letter. So we say a university and a European, because these words begin with a consonant sound, and an hour and an honest man, because the h is silent and the word begins with a vowel sound.

Rules for the

The is used before a noun already mentioned, before a unique object such as the sun or the earth, before superlatives such as the best, before the names of rivers, seas, mountain ranges and groups of islands, and before the names of holy books and newspapers. It is also used with adjectives that stand for a class, as in the rich and the poor.

Omission of the Article

No article is used before proper nouns, before abstract nouns used in a general sense, before the names of languages, meals, games and most countries, before uncountable nouns such as water and rice, and before plural nouns used in a general sense. Knowing when to leave the space empty is as important as knowing which article to write.

Demonstratives and Possessives

Demonstratives point to the noun: this and these for things near, that and those for things far. Possessives show ownership: my, your, his, her, its, our and their. These words already make the noun definite, so an article is not used along with them; we do not say the my book.

Quantifiers: some, any, many, much, few, little

Many and few are used with countable nouns, while much and little are used with uncountable nouns. Some is usual in positive sentences and any in negative and question sentences. A few means some at least, but few alone means hardly any, and the same contrast holds for a little and little. These small differences decide the meaning of the sentence.

Distributives: each, every, either, neither

Each and every take a singular noun and a singular verb. Either means one of two and neither means not one of the two, and both also take a singular verb. These words are tested because the verb that follows them is easy to get wrong.

How This Topic Appears in the Examination

In ADRE Grade IV, APSC and Assam Police English papers this topic appears as a blank to be filled with the correct article or determiner, as a sentence in which the wrong article must be spotted, or as a question asking whether an article is needed at all. The sentences are short and the tested point is almost always a and an by sound, the with a unique or already-mentioned noun, or many and much with the correct type of noun.

Shortcut Methods for Quick Answers

For a and an, say the word aloud in the mind and listen to the first sound. For the, ask whether the listener already knows which thing is meant; if yes, use the. For quantifiers, decide first whether the noun is countable or uncountable, and then the choice becomes automatic. When two answers look possible, eliminate the one that breaks the countable rule.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing a or an by the letter instead of by the sound, as in a hour instead of an hour.
  • Using the before a proper noun where no article is needed.
  • Putting an article together with a possessive, as in the my friend.
  • Using much with a countable noun or many with an uncountable noun.
  • Confusing a few with few, or a little with little, and changing the meaning.

How to Prepare This Topic

  1. Learn the sound rule for a and an with a list of common exceptions.
  2. List the cases where the is used and where it is left out.
  3. Practise countable and uncountable nouns with many, much, few and little.
  4. Revise demonstratives, possessives and distributives together.
  5. Finish with a mixed fill-in-the-blank set and read each sentence aloud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a or an decided by the letter or by the sound?

By the sound. We write an hour and an honest man because the h is silent, and a university and a one-rupee coin because these begin with a consonant sound even though the spelling starts with a vowel letter.

When do we use the with a noun?

When the noun is specific and already known to the listener, when it is unique such as the sun, or when it is a superlative such as the best. If the listener cannot tell which thing is meant, the is not used.

What is the difference between few and a few?

A few means some, at least a small number, and has a positive sense. Few alone means hardly any and has a negative sense. The same contrast applies to a little and little with uncountable nouns.

Can we use the with a possessive?

No. A possessive such as my, your or their already makes the noun definite, so an article is not used with it. We say my book and not the my book.

Is an article needed before abstract nouns?

Usually not when the noun is used in a general sense, as in honesty is the best policy. The may be used when the noun is particular, as in the honesty of the man surprised everyone.

Article আৰু Determiner

গোটেই বিষয়টো তিনিটা article, a, an আৰু the, আৰু this, that, some, any, many, much, few, little, each, every ৰ দৰে determiner ৰ এটা গোটৰ ওপৰত ঘূৰে।

  • Article: বিশেষ্যৰ আগত বহা a, an আৰু the শব্দ।
  • Indefinite article: a বা an, এটা অনিৰ্দিষ্ট বস্তুৰ বাবে ব্যৱহৃত।
  • Definite article: the, এটা নিৰ্দিষ্ট তথা জনাজাত বস্তুৰ বাবে ব্যৱহৃত।
  • Determiner: বিশেষ্যৰ আগত আহি তাক সীমিত কৰা যিকোনো শব্দ, যেনে this, my, some বা every।
  • Demonstrative: this, that, these আৰু those, যিবোৰে বিশেষ্যলৈ আঙুলিয়াই দিয়ে।
  • Quantifier: many, much, few, little, some আৰু any ৰ দৰে পৰিমাণৰ শব্দ।
  • Zero article: প্ৰয়োজন নথকা ঠাইত article নিদিয়া।

Article নিজেই এটা ধরনৰ determiner, সেয়ে বিষয়টো একেই স্থানত বহি একেই প্ৰশ্নৰ উত্তৰ দিয়া শব্দৰ এটা পৰিয়াল হিচাপে শিকাটো ভাল।

Article

a আৰু an ৰ নিয়ম

ব্যঞ্জন ধ্বনিৰে আৰম্ভ হোৱা শব্দৰ আগত a, আৰু স্বৰ ধ্বনিৰে আৰম্ভ হোৱা শব্দৰ আগত an ব্যৱহাৰ কৰক। আক্ষৰতে ধ্বনিটোৱেই গুৰুত্বপূৰ্ণ, বৰ্ণটো নহয়। সেয়ে আমি a university আৰু a European বুলি কওঁ, কাৰণ এইবোৰ ব্যঞ্জন ধ্বনিৰে আৰম্ভ হয়, আৰু an hour আৰু an honest man বুলি কওঁ, কাৰণ h নীৰৱ আৰু শব্দটো স্বৰ ধ্বনিৰে আৰম্ভ হয়।

the ৰ নিয়ম

Article

Possessive

Demonstrative এ বিশেষ্যলৈ আঙুলিয়াই দিয়ে: ওচৰৰ বস্তুৰ বাবে this আৰু these, দূৰৰ বস্তুৰ বাবে that আৰু those। Possessive এ মালিকীস্বত্ব দেখুৱায়: my, your, his, her, its, our আৰু their। এই শব্দবোৰে ইতিমধ্যে বিশেষ্যটোক নিৰ্দিষ্ট কৰি তোলে, সেয়ে এনে শব্দৰ লগত article ব্যৱহাৰ নহয়; আমি the my book বুলি নকওঁ।

Quantifier: some, any, many, much, few, little

Many আৰু few গণনাযোগ্য বিশেষ্যৰ সৈতে, আৰু much আৰু little অগণনীয় বিশেষ্যৰ সৈতে ব্যৱহৃত হয়। Some সাধাৰণতে ধনাত্মক বাক্যত আৰু any ঋণাত্মক তথা প্ৰশ্নবোধক বাক্যত ব্যৱহৃত হয়। A few ৰ অৰ্থ অলপ অথচ আছে, আনহাতে few ৰ অৰ্থ প্ৰায় নাই, আৰু a little আৰু little ৰ ক্ষেত্ৰতো একেই পাৰ্থক্য আছে। এই সৰু পাৰ্থক্যই বাক্যৰ অৰ্থ নিৰ্ণয় কৰে।

Distributive: each, every, either, neither

  • ধ্বনিৰ সলনি বৰ্ণ অনুসৰি a বা an বাছনি কৰা, যেনে an hour ৰ সলনি a hour।
  • proper noun ৰ আগত য'ত প্ৰয়োজন নাই ত'ত the ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা।
  • Possessive ৰ লগত article লগোৱা, যেনে the my friend।
  • গণনাযোগ্য বিশেষ্যৰ লগত much বা অগণনীয় বিশেষ্যৰ লগত many ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা।
  • a few ৰ লগত few, বা a little ৰ লগত little মিলাই অৰ্থ সলনি কৰা।

এই বিষয়ৰ প্ৰস্তুতি কেনেকৈ কৰিব

  1. সাধাৰণ ব্যতিক্ৰমৰ তালিকাসহ a আৰু an ৰ ধ্বনি নিয়ম শিকক।
  2. the ক'ত ব্যৱহাৰ হয় আৰু ক'ত বাদ দিয়া হয় সেয়া তালিকা কৰক।
  3. many, much, few আৰু little ৰ সৈতে গণনাযোগ্য-অগণনীয় বিশেষ্যৰ অভ্যাস কৰক।

আমি an hour আৰু an honest man লিখোঁ কাৰণ h নীৰৱ, আৰু a university আৰু a one-rupee coin লিখোঁ কাৰণ বানান স্বৰ বৰ্ণৰে আৰম্ভ হ'লেও এইবোৰ ব্যঞ্জন ধ্বনিৰে আৰম্ভ হয়।

অগণনীয় বিশেষ্যৰ সৈতে a little আৰু little ৰ ক্ষেত্ৰতো একেই পাৰ্থক্য।

Possessive ৰ লগত the ব্যৱহাৰ কৰিব পাৰিনে?

নোৱাৰি। my, your বা their ৰ দৰে possessive এ ইতিমধ্যে বিশেষ্যটোক নিৰ্দিষ্ট কৰি তোলে, সেয়ে ইয়াৰ লগত article ব্যৱহাৰ নহয়। আমি my book কওঁ, the my book নহয়।

Abstract noun ৰ আগত article লাগে নে?

সাধাৰণ অৰ্থত ব্যৱহাৰ কৰিলে সাধাৰণতে নালাগে, যেনে honesty is the best policy। বিশেষ অৰ্থত হ'লে the ব্যৱহাৰ হ'ব পাৰে, যেনে the honesty of the man surprised everyone।
